Managing Finances and Measuring Performance in Nonprofit Organizations

The new and updated Managing Finances and Measuring Performance in Nonprofit Organizations, is a two-part series, that is intended for staff and board members who read, prepare or use financial reports, data and budgets to oversee and manage a non-profit. The workshop will be presented by ESC Consultant Steve Owen.

This workshop is appropriate for organizations of all sizes and ranges in difficulty from the elementary to intermediate level, and all of it is suitable for attendees who have minimal technical accounting background, as well as those attendees who possess an accounting foundation.

The emphasis will be on providing attendees with practical knowledge that can be used immediately. Whether you are new to your agency’s board or staff or have substantial experience in the nonprofit environment, this workshop will provide you some tools that will help enhance your ability to prepare and use financial information for decision making.

The workshop will be presented in a seminar style format and will include case studies and interactive exercises for attendees. After the presentation, the presenter will remain available to respond to specific interest areas of attendees.

Among the topics to be discussed are:

SESSION 1

  • Organizational sustainability – how to use sustainability throughout the financial management process and in setting policy.
  • Forecasting – re-scoping based on mission, vision and goals in a new world/crisis environment
  • Budget tools to evaluate cost savings opportunities

SESSION 2

  • Organizational sustainability – how to measure, create and integrate the concept of sustainability into planning, creating measures and tools for assessing sustainability and understanding the relationship between mission and resources.
  • Financial modeling – understanding and applying tools and process of modeling.
  • Recasting budgets and contingency planning, including use of debt.

Attendees should leave the workshops with:

  • A basic understanding of the key foundational concept of sustainability and how to apply that to oversight, management and planning
  •  Assessing for and planning for the implications of environmental and organization crises on managing finances and measure performance

This session will be conducted by Steve Owen, ESC Consultant.  Steve Owen is recently retired. He spent his career as a CEO or CFO in not for profit organizations and North Carolina’s largest health care payer, providing management consulting and as a principal fiscal analyst at the North Carolina General Assembly supporting policy decisions for physical and behavioral health care programs. Steve earned a B.A. in accounting, a Certificate in Health Care Financial Management, a Master of Science in Management and is a volunteer with Executive Service Corps of the Triangle (ESC).
