Supervision 101

Supervision 101 is an ESC workshop for new supervisors and those with less than 3 years of experience in nonprofits.  Key human resource functions every supervisor should know about – how to:

  • Define work
  • Staff and hire
  • Build a performance culture
  • Deal with common office issues
  • Deal with employee complaints
  • Understanding what employees want
  • Building supervisory authority
  • Effective supervisor behaviors to develop

Daniel Janssen is an accomplished international human resource executive with over 30 years of experience in the design, implementation and management of global human resource programs. He is an expert in recruitment and talent management, compensation, entitlements and rewards, performance management, policy development and legal compliance.

Daniel retired as the director of human resources for Ipas, a nonprofit, $60 million international reproductive health organization. Prior to that, he was the head of recruitment for the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, a 190-nation UN agency with over 500 staff members. He also worked for the Peace Corps and various U.S. government agencies.

Daniel has a B.A. in political science and history from Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota. He also attended graduate school at the Maxwell School for Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University, studying international and public administration. In addition, he completed the executive development program at George Washington University.
